**Winter Adventures & Backcountry Skiing**

IMPORTANT: All winter access to San Juan Backcountry Lodge requires professional avalanche-certified guide services. This is not optional—the terrain surrounding the lodge includes serious avalanche hazards that demand expert assessment and management.

The San Juan Mountains receive an average of 400+ inches of snowfall annually, creating some of North America’s most legendary powder skiing and riding terrain. This is serious mountain country with equally serious avalanche hazards. Our winter operations prioritize safety while providing access to incredible backcountry experiences.

**Why Guided Access is Required**

The lodge sits in complex avalanche terrain with multiple runout zones. Professional guides provide:

• Daily avalanche hazard assessment specific to access routes and nearby terrain

• Safe transportation to and from the lodge via snowmobile or snow cat

• Route selection based on current conditions and group ability

• Terrain evaluation for ski touring from the lodge

• Emergency response capability and rescue equipment

**Our Guide Partnership**

We partner with San Juan Expeditions, a respected local guide service with deep knowledge of the area’s snowpack, weather patterns, and terrain. All guides maintain current AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education) certifications and wilderness first aid training.

We’re also open to working with other qualified guide services. If you have your own preferred guide who meets our safety requirements (AIARE Level 2 or higher, local experience, proper insurance), we can discuss arrangements.

**Backcountry Skiing & Splitboarding**

The San Juans offer thousands of skiable acres with terrain ranging from mellow tree skiing to steep couloirs and alpine bowls. Your guide will work with your group to identify appropriate objectives based on conditions, experience level, and goals.

Experience Requirements:

• Solid skiing/riding ability in varied snow conditions

• Basic avalanche awareness (AIARE 1 recommended but not required)

• Physical fitness for touring at 10,000-13,000 feet elevation

• Appropriate backcountry ski equipment (touring setup, beacon, shovel, probe)

**Snowmobiling**

The San Juans offer world-class snowmobile terrain with hundreds of miles of trails and unlimited backcountry riding. Several local operators provide snowmobile rentals and guided tours.

**Cross-Country Skiing**

Mellower ski touring options exist on mining roads and gentler terrain near the lodge. Nordic skiing on packed roads provides a lower-risk option for groups seeking winter exercise without avalanche exposure.

**Cat Skiing & Heli-Skiing**

We can arrange connections to cat skiing and helicopter skiing operations in the San Juan Mountains. These operations provide access to terrain and vertical that would be difficult or impossible to reach via touring.

**Silverton Mountain Ski Area**

Located minutes from town, Silverton Mountain operates as an unguided, expert-only ski area with one chairlift accessing serious backcountry terrain. They also offer guided options, helicopter skiing, and multi-day packages.

**Safety Equipment Required**

All winter guests must have:

• Avalanche transceiver (beacon)

• Avalanche probe

• Avalanche shovel

• Backcountry ski or splitboard setup (if ski touring)

• Rental equipment available through local shops and guide services

**Season & Snow Conditions**

• Early season (November-December): Variable coverage, building snowpack

• Peak season (January-March): Deep snowpack, frequent storms, best powder

• Spring (April-May): Corn snow cycles, longer days, more stable conditions

Silverton’s high elevation means cold temperatures and dry powder. Be prepared for winter conditions even in April.
