San Juan Backcountry Lodge is a family-owned mountain retreat located 2 miles outside Silverton, Colorado, in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Opening in June 2026, the lodge represents our fifth vacation rental property and our first Colorado mountain location.
Experience You Can Trust
Brothers Spencer and Adam Rex own and operate San Juan Backcountry Lodge. We built our reputation creating exceptional vacation experiences at Escalante Cliff House (EscalanteCliffHouse.com) and Birch Creek House (BirchCreekHouse.com), both located in Escalante, Utah. Our properties are known for combining remote locations with thoughtful amenities and attention to detail.
Our Colorado Vision
We chose Silverton for its authentic mountain character, legendary snow, and unmatched access to backcountry terrain. The San Juan Mountains offer everything we look for: dramatic scenery, year-round adventure opportunities, and a genuine Colorado experience far from crowded resort areas. At 10,400 feet elevation, the lodge provides the perfect basecamp for serious mountain enthusiasts.
Summer Operations (May 1 – October 31)
During the summer season, San Juan Backcountry Lodge operates as a traditional vacation rental. Guests have full access to the property and surrounding terrain. The location offers immediate access to legendary 4×4 routes including Engineer Pass, Cinnamon Pass, and numerous mining roads. Hikers and mountain bikers will find endless trails, while the nearby town of Silverton provides dining, shops, and services.
Winter Guided Operations (November 1 – April 30)
Winter access to the lodge requires professional guide services due to significant avalanche terrain surrounding the property. We take mountain safety seriously and work exclusively with experienced, avalanche-certified guides who understand local snowpack conditions and terrain hazards. Our partnership with San Juan Expeditions and other guiding outfits ensures guests receive expert guidance for backcountry skiing and snowboarding.
The guided requirement isn’t just about reaching the lodge—it’s about ensuring safe, enjoyable winter mountain experiences. Guides assess conditions daily, determine safe access routes, and identify appropriate terrain for the group’s skill level. This professional oversight allows guests to focus on the incredible skiing and riding the San Juans are famous for.
Winter activities accessible from the lodge with proper guidance include backcountry skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. We can also arrange connections to cat skiing and heli-ski operators in the area.
Partner with Us
We’re actively seeking partnerships with qualified backcountry guides and outdoor professionals. If you’re an avalanche-certified guide with San Juan Mountains experience, we’d love to discuss collaboration opportunities. Professional guides who can provide safe winter access and guide services for our guests are essential to our winter operations.
