**Summer Adventures from San Juan Backcountry Lodge**
From late May through October, the San Juan Mountains transform into an outdoor recreation paradise. Our lodge provides the perfect basecamp for exploring legendary 4×4 routes, conquering alpine peaks, riding world-class mountain bike trails, and experiencing authentic Colorado high country.
**4×4 & Off-Road Adventures**
Silverton is ground zero for Colorado’s most iconic high-altitude 4×4 routes. The area’s mining history created a network of roads that now provide access to stunning alpine terrain, ghost towns, and breathtaking mountain passes.
Engineer Pass – This legendary route tops out at 12,800 feet and connects Silverton to Lake City. The road passes through remarkable alpine scenery, historic mining sites, and offers incredible wildflower displays in July and August. Part of the renowned Alpine Loop Scenic Byway and suitable for stock 4×4 vehicles in dry conditions.
Cinnamon Pass – Reaching 12,640 feet, Cinnamon Pass provides spectacular views and connects to the Alpine Loop. This route features some shelf road sections and rewards drivers with expansive vistas of the San Juan high country. The pass typically opens in mid-June depending on snowpack.
California Gulch & Animas Forks – Explore the extensive network of mining roads around Animas Forks ghost town. California Gulch offers more challenging terrain with several technical sections, while the network around Animas Forks provides easier options suitable for most high-clearance vehicles.
Black Bear Pass – For experienced 4×4 drivers, Black Bear Pass represents one of Colorado’s most challenging and scenic routes. This one-way road features extreme exposure and technical sections. Only attempt with proper equipment and experience.
What You’ll Need:
• 4×4 vehicle with high clearance (minimum 9 inches recommended)
• Recovery equipment: tow strap, d-rings, shovel
• Paper maps or GPS device (cell service unreliable)
• Emergency supplies and extra fuel
• Weather awareness – afternoon thunderstorms common
**Hiking & Peak Bagging**
The San Juan Mountains offer some of Colorado’s most spectacular hiking, from accessible day hikes to challenging 14,000-foot peaks.
Ice Lakes Basin – This 7-mile round trip hike climbs 2,500 feet to reach stunning turquoise alpine lakes surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks. Peak wildflower season runs mid-July through mid-August.
Island Lake – A popular 7-mile round trip with moderate elevation gain to a beautiful alpine lake. The trail passes through wildflower meadows and offers excellent views of surrounding peaks.
14ers Near Silverton:
• Handies Peak (14,048′) – One of Colorado’s easier 14ers, accessible from American Basin
• Redcloud Peak (14,034′) and Sunshine Peak (14,001′) – Can be combined in one day
• Wetterhorn Peak (14,015′) – More technical, requires route-finding skills
**Mountain Biking**
The Colorado Trail passes through the Silverton area, providing access to world-class singletrack. The area also offers numerous mining roads perfect for mountain biking, with options ranging from mellow valley rides to challenging high-altitude routes.
**Fishing**
The Animas River and numerous alpine lakes offer excellent fishing for cutthroat, rainbow, and brook trout. Colorado fishing license required.
**Best Times to Visit**
• Late May – June: Waterfalls at peak flow, roads opening, fewer crowds
• July – August: Peak wildflowers, warmest weather, all roads open
• September – October: Fall colors, cooler temps, excellent visibility, fewer visitorss
