Booking & Reservations
When will the lodge be open for reservations?
San Juan Backcountry Lodge is scheduled to open June 1, 2026. We’re accepting reservations now. Sign up for our newsletter to receive notifications of happenings at the Lodge.
Do you rent individual rooms or is it the entire lodge?
We rent the entire lodge only. This ensures privacy for your group and provides exclusive access to all common areas.
What is the minimum/maximum stay?

Location & Access
Where exactly is the lodge located?
The lodge is located 2 miles outside Silverton, Colorado in San Juan County. Exact address and GPS coordinates are provided upon booking confirmation.
What kind of vehicle do I need in summer?
High-clearance vehicle required (minimum 9 inches ground clearance). 4-wheel drive strongly recommended.
How do I access the lodge in winter?
Winter access is by snowmobile or snow cat only, coordinated through our required guide service partners.
Winter & Avalanche Safety
Why is a guide required in winter?
The lodge is surrounded by serious avalanche terrain. Professional guides are required for safe access, daily hazard assessment, terrain selection, and emergency response.
Do I need avalanche training to visit in winter?
AIARE Level 1 course is recommended but not required. Your guide will provide necessary safety briefings.
What avalanche safety gear do I need?
Required: avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel. Rental gear is available through local shops and guide services.
Can I bring my own guide?
Yes, provided they meet our requirements: AIARE Level 2 or higher certification, San Juan Mountains experience, current wilderness first aid, and proper insurance.
Activities & Surroundings
What 4×4 trails are nearby?
Engineer Pass, Cinnamon Pass, California Gulch, and the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. Black Bear Pass is also accessible for experienced drivers.
Are there good hiking trails nearby?
Excellent hiking includes Ice Lakes Basin, Island Lake, access to multiple 14ers, and the Colorado Trail.
Amenities & Logistics
Is there cell phone service?
Cell service is great at the lodge at the lodge. WiFi internet is Starlink and works very well.
Do I need to bring food?
Yes, the lodge has a full kitchen but no food is provided. Stock up in Durango for best selection.
What is the elevation?
The lodge sits at 10400 feet elevation. Be prepared for altitude effects.
What is the nearest hospital?
Silverton has a small medical clinic. The nearest full hospital is Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, approximately 50 miles away.
Weather & Seasons
What is the best time to visit?
Summer (July-August): Warmest weather, peak wildflowers, wild blueberries and strawberries. September-October: Fall colors, fewer crowds. Winter (January-March): Best powder skiing.
How much snow does the area get?
The San Juan Mountains average 400+ inches of snow annually. Silverton is one of Colorado’s snowiest locations.
